The CERES Urban Fire Breathing Marsupial (Urban Biogas System) 2011

Part fire breathing kinetic marsupial sculpture, part waste devouring artificial stomach. In partnership with GPT group and the Australian Federal Gov Smart Energy Zones grant, the CERES urban biogas system aims to engage the community in re-thinking food waste and agricultural inputs.
A sustainable world must be a ZERO WASTE world and a key technology for converting waste food into plant nutrients is biogas. With biogas, food waste is converted into fertiliser and methane gas is produced as a bio-product which can be burnt for energy instead of being released into the atmosphere where it is a damaging greenhouse gas.
As part of a team of CERES in-house designers, engineers and contracted biogas specialists I am currently working on a highly sculptural design for the system which will process 300kg of waste food per day. Reflecting the notion that biogas systems are essentially artificial versions of the stomachs of ruminant animals, the system will be created in the form of a giant marsupial, its skin peeled open to reveal waste converting inners.
Due for construction late 2011, funds allowing.
